Career Summary
|
Naas Botha was one of the great figures of South Africa’s domestic and international rugby over a period of nearly twenty years. He first played for Northern Transvaal in 1978 and did not hang up his boots for the last time until 1995. Those boots were synonymous with some of the greatest goal-kicking exploits in his country: 3,781 points in a career of 277 first-class matches. His particular forte was drop-goals, with a remarkable 210 recorded, including 18 in his 28 tests. He twice completed hat-tricks in test matches - against South America when winning his second cap and against Ireland 12 months later. Both matches were played in Durban and it was against Natal that he dropped five goals in one match in 1992. Botha contributed far more to his teams than goal-kicking. His tactical kicking was of the highest order and his generalship at fly-half was an inspiration. He was also highly-regarded for his captaincy, leading Northern Transvaal 128 times in 179 appearances and completing his international career at the helm with the Springboks.
